HB 2295 Summary

• Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, local school boards will receive $0.40 per meal from state general fund appropriations for each reduced price meal served under the federal reduced price school meals program (42 U.S.C. 1759(a))

• Local school boards are prohibited from collecting the $0.40 reduced price meal fee from students participating in the reduced price school meals program, effectively making these meals free for eligible students

• The existing state reimbursement of $0.06 per type-A lunch served under approved school lunch programs continues unchanged

• If total statewide entitlements exceed appropriated funds in any school year, the appropriation will be prorated among all boards proportionally

• Amends K.S.A. 72-17,137 with an effective date upon publication in the statute book
