Sponsored veterans-related legislation including identification of Persian Gulf War syndrome victims, reduced license plate fees for veterans, grants for Veterans' Experience History Projects, and establishment of a Kansas 9/11 Memorial in Anthony

Worked as a grocer and entrepreneur before entering politics, managing stores in Ottawa, Kansas and operating several grocery stores with his brother
