Fully autonomous vehicles may operate on Kentucky highways without a human driver if the automated driving system is engaged, the vehicle can achieve minimal risk condition upon system failure, and complies with applicable traffic laws and federal safety standards

Vehicles over 62,000 pounds gross weight must have a human driver present to monitor and intervene from July 15, 2024 through July 31, 2026

School districts are prohibited from operating fully autonomous vehicles as school buses or using them to transport students for any purpose

Fully autonomous vehicles requiring a commercial driver's license to operate are prohibited from operating on state highways

Motor carrier platoons must now have a CDL-endorsed driver present in each commercial vehicle (changed from only the lead vehicle), and platoon operation plans must be submitted to the Department of Kentucky State Police in addition to the transportation department
