Health plans in Kentucky must provide coverage for scalp cooling systems used to prevent or reduce hair loss during chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer, effective January 1, 2027

"Scalp cooling system" is defined as any device used to cool the scalp to prevent or reduce hair loss during chemotherapy treatment

The coverage requirement applies to fully insured plans, self-insured plans, limited health service benefit plans, state employee health insurance, and health plans offered by state postsecondary educational institutions

Coverage requirements will not apply to qualified health plans if federal law would require Kentucky to make cost defrayal payments under the Affordable Care Act, unless the requirement to make such payments is no longer applicable

The insurance commissioner is authorized to promulgate administrative regulations necessary to enforce and implement the new coverage requirements
