Local school boards must appoint at least one student representative beginning with the 2026-2027 academic year to attend meetings, provide student perspective, and learn about district governance.

Student representatives may cast nonbinding advisory votes on action items that are recorded in meeting minutes, but cannot vote officially or participate in closed sessions.

Eligible students must be enrolled in a district high school, classified as a junior or senior, have completed civics requirements under KRS 158.141, and serve at least a one-year term.

Selection process must include an election by high school students, and representatives may miss a maximum of two board meetings.

Student representatives may participate via video teleconferencing and must be afforded full participation in board meetings equal to other members, except for voting and closed sessions.
