Employers with 75 or more employees are prohibited from demoting, dismissing, disciplining, or discriminating against employees who are candidates for, currently serving in, or elected to the General Assembly, city legislative bodies, local government councils, or local school boards

Employees elected or appointed to these offices may request a leave of absence that employers must grant, which may be paid or unpaid

Leave of absence limits: 4 terms for House of Representatives members, 3 terms for Senate members, and 3 terms for local government body or school board members

Employers violating these protections face civil penalties of $100 to $1,000 per offense

Aggrieved employees may seek injunctive relief, recover damages, and obtain costs and reasonable attorney fees if they prevail in court
