Senator Jimmy Higdon created Military Kids Day in 2017 after Molly Mattingly of Bardstown suggested honoring military children for their sacrifices; attendance has grown from 20-40 participants in 2017 to approximately 250 in 2025

Fort Knox Schools and other districts have incorporated participation into their fourth-grade curriculum as part of students' study of Kentucky government

2026 marks Senator Higdon's final year in the Senate and leading the event; the resolution directs adjournment in his recognition and transmittal of a copy to Senator Matthew Deneen
