Purnell was born in 1934 in Nashville, Tennessee, and worked for 75 years as a partner in F.B. Purnell's Sausage Company, headquartered in Simpsonville, Kentucky

Led Facilities and Maintenance at the company's Simpsonville factory and coined the tagline "It's Goooo-od"; products are sold in grocery stores nationwide and at Dairy Queen and Cracker Barrel restaurants

Active community member as a member of Shelbyville Baptist Church, the Thoroughbred Chorus, two country clubs, and supporter of St. Jude's Children's Hospital

Survived by wife Jane (married 71 years), three children, seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren; resolution sponsored by Senator Reginald Thomas
