Surviving spouses receiving Firefighters' Retirement System survivor benefits must designate children with disabilities or dependent minor children as beneficiaries within 30 days of the member's death (previously no deadline specified)

The system's actuary must certify that combined benefits paid to the child and remaining benefits to the spouse equal the total value that would have been paid to the spouse alone

Benefits paid to a child with a disability must be factored to mitigate any reduction to the surviving spouse's benefit resulting from the designation

Benefits designated to a child with a disability continue through the life of the child (removes prior language allowing termination if the disability was no longer medically determined to be permanent)
