School boards may adopt a resolution to hold elections during fall gubernatorial elections instead of congressional elections, with plans due to the secretary of state by July 1, 2026, and the first such election occurring in 2031.

Municipalities may adopt an ordinance to hold elections during gubernatorial elections, with plans due to the secretary of state by January 12, 2027, and the first such election occurring in 2031.

Once adopted, neither school board nor municipal plans to switch to gubernatorial election timing may be revoked.

Elected officials under the new plans serve four-year terms beginning January 1 (school board members) or July 1 (municipal officers) following their election.

Transitional provisions extend current terms for officials elected in 2026 (school boards) and 2027 (municipalities) until their successors take office in 2032.
