Health insurers offering hospital, medical, or surgical benefits in Louisiana must cover integrative cancer treatments including acupuncture, cryotherapy, and scalp cooling systems when recommended by nationally recognized cancer treatment guidelines

Scalp cooling systems are defined as devices used to cool the scalp to prevent or reduce hair loss during chemotherapy, designed for repeated use and primarily serving a medical purpose

Insurers may limit acupuncture coverage to 15 visits per plan year for active cancer treatment, unless additional treatments are recommended by national guidelines and the treating physician

Coverage may be subject to standard deductibles, coinsurance, copayments, and prior authorization consistent with the health plan

Effective January 1, 2026 for new policies; existing policies must conform by their renewal date or no later than January 1, 2027
