Members of the Municipal Employees' Retirement System (MERS) with at least 5 years of creditable service who take a job covered by the Louisiana State Employees' Retirement System (LASERS) may elect to remain in MERS instead of joining LASERS

Written notice of election must be filed with the board of trustees within 30 days of the new employment effective date, and the election is irrevocable

Applies to persons who became employed in a LASERS-covered position after December 31, 2024

Persons employed in such positions between December 31, 2024 and the Act's effective date have 30 days from the effective date to file their election notice

Any costs resulting from the Act will be funded through additional employer contributions as required by the Louisiana Constitution
