Health insurers are prohibited from denying coverage of proton therapy or proton beam therapy for cancer treatment when recommended by American Society for Radiation Oncology practice guidelines

Coverage may still be subject to standard annual deductibles, coinsurance, and copayment provisions consistent with the health plan

Exemptions apply to excepted benefits plans, limited health benefit insurance plans, and short-term policies with terms under twelve months

New policies issued on or after January 1, 2026 must comply; existing policies must conform by their renewal date or no later than January 1, 2027
