Municipalities with populations of 5,000 or less may make an irrevocable election to terminate participation in the Municipal Police Employees' Retirement System (MPERS) by adopting a termination resolution

Terminating municipalities must provide written notification to MPERS at least 30 days before the effective date and notify new employees of nonparticipation at or before hiring

Employees hired after the termination resolution takes effect cannot be enrolled in MPERS, and no employer or employee contributions will be paid for them

Current employees who meet the definition of "employee" on or before the termination effective date remain members of the retirement system

Termination resolutions become effective 60 days after adoption by the municipality's governing authority
