Employers in Lafayette Parish must provide lifetime health insurance coverage for surviving spouses of law enforcement officers and firemen killed in the line of duty

Surviving children, stepchildren, and adopted children are covered if under age 18, under age 23 and enrolled in school full-time, or physically or mentally disabled

Coverage must equal that offered to active employees; surviving spouses or guardians may decline the coverage

Provisions apply retroactively to January 1, 2017, for qualifying line-of-duty deaths

Designated as the "MJ 911 Act" in memory of officers lost in the line of duty
