All mayors must complete at least 16 hours of annual training through workshops and courses approved by the Louisiana Municipal Association, covering 13 categories including the Lawrason Act, budgeting, ethics, Open Meetings Law, emergency preparedness, and parliamentary procedure.

Existing state-mandated training (ethics, sexual harassment prevention, cybersecurity, campaign finance, procurement, and emergency preparedness) counts toward the 16-hour requirement.

Mayors must attest to compliance using a legislative auditor form submitted with the municipality's annual financial statements, and the CPA performing the municipal audit must verify the mayor's training compliance.

The legislative auditor must maintain a public website list showing which mayors are compliant and non-compliant with training requirements.

Temporary mayoral appointees serving less than one year are exempt from the training requirements; effective January 1, 2027.
