Out-of-state tow trucks registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and possessing a valid USDOT number are prohibited from conducting intrastate towing in Louisiana; they must obtain a Louisiana towing license plate to operate within the state.

Tow trucks operating in interstate commerce must provide documentation to State Police proving predetermined interstate transport intent, including vehicle identification numbers, consignor/consignee addresses, and origin/destination locations.

Property owners must use signage approved by the Louisiana State Police Towing and Recovery Unit (TRU) at entrances and exits of properties where unauthorized vehicles may be towed.

Written towing contracts between property owners and tow companies must define parking rules, include start and termination dates, specify causes for nonconsensual tows, and expire annually at 11:59 a.m. on June 13th.

Violations may result in revocation of towing license, storage license, or both; tow truck company owners cannot use lack of knowledge of employee conduct as a defense.
