All licensed adult residential care providers in Louisiana must have a permanently installed generator or Louisiana Department of Health-approved alternative electrical power source with sufficient onsite fuel for 72 hours of full-load operation

Generators must simultaneously power life safety systems, patient care lighting, medical equipment, potable water and sewer systems, medication dispensing and refrigeration, dietary services, laundry, and HVAC (50% capacity for facilities built before August 1, 2026; 90% for newer facilities)

Facilities must maintain fuel delivery agreements to extend generator operation to 168 total hours during a single emergency event

Waivers available for pre-August 2026 facilities lacking physical space or facing governmental ordinances preventing compliance, but waived facilities must submit annual emergency plans to parish offices of emergency preparedness

Compliance deadline is December 1, 2027, with the Louisiana Department of Health authorized to grant one-time extensions up to 12 months; the State Fire Marshal determines compliance and reports violations to the department
