Student-athletes at Massachusetts colleges and universities may earn compensation for use of their name, image, and likeness (NIL) without losing scholarship eligibility or athletic participation rights

Institutions must designate NIL compliance officers, notify athletes of contract conflicts within 5 business days, and provide annual training on contract negotiation, financial literacy, and intellectual property

Athlete agents must register with the Secretary of State every two years, are capped at 15% fees on NIL agreements, and face fines up to $100,000 per violation for misconduct

Student-athletes must disclose NIL agreements within 72 hours of signing; agreements are exempt from public records laws and require written consent for disclosure

Massachusetts Attorney General enforces compliance with authority to investigate complaints within 60 days and impose fines up to $250,000 on institutions; effective date July 1, 2027
