Pet shops may only sell dogs, cats, or rabbits obtained from public animal pounds, animal control agencies, SPCA shelters, humane society shelters, or rescue groups with cooperative shelter agreements

Pet shops must maintain source documentation records for each dog, cat, or rabbit sold for at least 1 year

Each animal's cage or enclosure must display a conspicuous sign identifying the shelter or rescue organization from which the animal was obtained

Public animal control agencies and shelters may periodically inspect pet shop records for compliance

Violations carry a $500 civil penalty per animal offered for sale in violation of the law
