Plainville's town administrator may appoint retired police officers as special police officers to perform police details, provided they retired in good standing from full-time service with the town

Special police officers must pass a medical examination at their own expense before appointment and may serve until age 70, exempt from standard police maximum age restrictions

Appointments are annual (starting July 1), at-will, and require 14 days written notice for removal; officers must maintain POST Commission certification and complete required training

Special police officers have full arrest powers during detail work but are excluded from civil service protections, collective bargaining rights, and certain injury-related benefits under Chapter 32

Officers may be required to purchase insurance indemnifying the town against workers' compensation costs and must bear costs of training, equipment, and uniforms unless the chief decides otherwise
