Public schools cannot require student athletes on single-sex sports teams to participate in matches against opposing teams that include athletes of the opposite sex.

Student athletes who refuse to play in such matches are protected from penalties including loss of playing time or loss of starting status.

Coaches of single-sex public school sports teams cannot be penalized for forfeiting matches against teams that include opposite-sex athletes.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, and athletic officials organizations cannot penalize schools, teams, coaches, or athletes for forfeiting or refusing to play, though forfeits may be recorded as losses.

"Single-sex team" is defined as any team designated as a girls' or boys' team, as opposed to co-ed teams.
