Every public high school in Massachusetts must offer at least one foundational computer science course and ensure all students can access it within their 4-year course of study, effective for school years beginning on or after July 1, 2026.

Foundational computer science courses must include rigorous mathematical or scientific concepts and align with standards adopted by the board.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education must develop a micro-credentialing process allowing educators and other interested persons to demonstrate competency in digital literacy and computer science subject matter.

Micro-credentialed individuals may teach foundational computer science courses for up to 5 years without meeting full teacher certification requirements, aside from minimally necessary requirements determined by the department.

Requirements completed through the micro-credentialing process may be applied toward full certification to teach computer science.
