Beginning in the 2027-2028 school year, public middle schools must start instruction no earlier than 8:00 a.m., and public high schools must start no earlier than 8:30 a.m.

The State Board of Education may grant waivers to individual schools for earlier start times if there is a "compelling reason," but lack of funding does not qualify as a compelling reason.

During the 2026-2027 school year, each county board of education and public charter school must implement a public information campaign about sleep deprivation impacts, benefits of later start times, and local implementation strategies.

The public information campaign must target parents, teachers, administrators, coaches, and other stakeholders, and must provide an opportunity for feedback.

The act takes effect July 1, 2025.
