Counties and municipalities in Maryland may grant hiring and promotion preferences to eligible veterans, spouses of service members, spouses of veterans with service-connected disabilities, and surviving spouses of deceased veterans by adopting a local law

Local governments using selection tests for hiring may apply a 10-point credit (or equivalent) on those tests for eligible veterans, eligible spouses of active duty members, spouses of disabled veterans, and surviving spouses of deceased veterans

Former prisoners of war may receive an additional 2-point credit on selection tests under local laws that adopt these preferences

Current county or municipal employees and veterans convicted of a crime after military discharge are ineligible for the selection test credits

Takes effect October 1, 2025
