Health care providers may now notify patients of medical record destruction by first-class mail OR email, rather than requiring both methods as previously mandated

If notice is sent by email and no response or delivery receipt is obtained, the provider must follow up with first-class mail at least 10 days before the scheduled destruction date

Medical records for adult patients cannot be destroyed until 7 years after creation unless the patient is notified; for minors, records must be kept until age of majority plus 7 years

Notice must include the destruction date and a statement that the record or synopsis can be retrieved at a designated location
