County boards of education may reappoint an incumbent superintendent at any point during their current term, rather than waiting until the final year of the contract

Reappointment decisions must be made at a public meeting no later than March 1 of the year in which the contract is being renewed

Reappointed superintendents serve a new 4-year term beginning the immediately following July 1

Initial superintendent appointments (non-reappointments) must still occur between February 1 and June 30 of the year the term begins

The law does not apply to Baltimore City, and certain provisions do not apply to Prince George's County; effective date is June 1, 2025
