Religious educational institutions accredited by U.S. Department of Education-recognized accrediting bodies would be exempt from obtaining a certificate of approval from the Maryland Higher Education Commission to operate in the state

The exemption applies only to religious institutions established before January 1, 2013

Institutions must meet existing criteria: established for religious educational purposes, provide programs only for religious vocations, offer only sectarian instruction, and note the religious nature on certificates/diplomas

Effective date: July 1, 2025
