Counties and municipalities in Maryland may grant hiring and promotion preferences to eligible veterans, spouses of service-connected disabled veterans, spouses of active duty service members, and surviving spouses of deceased veterans by adopting a local law

Local governments using selection tests for hiring may apply a 10-point credit (or equivalent) for eligible veterans, eligible spouses, spouses of disabled veterans, and surviving spouses of deceased veterans

Former prisoners of war may receive an additional 2-point credit on selection tests under locally adopted laws

Current county or municipal employees and veterans convicted of crimes after their military discharge are ineligible for the selection test credit
