Senate Joint Resolution 5, introduced January 27, 2025 by Senator Lewis Young, is a non-binding policy statement acknowledging the importance of culturally diverse curriculum in Maryland elementary and secondary schools

Establishes state policy that school curricula should encompass the history and experiences of groups that have experienced discrimination based on disability, ethnicity, gender, indigenous American Tribal affiliation, race, religion or faith, and sexual orientation

Affirms Maryland's commitment to providing nondiscriminatory, inclusive education and robust civic, cultural, and history instruction

Requires copies of the resolution be forwarded to Governor Wes Moore, legislative leadership, the State Board of Education President, State Superintendent of Schools, and presidents of all 24 county boards of education
