Religious educational institutions accredited by U.S. Department of Education-recognized accrediting bodies may not operate in Maryland without a certificate of approval from the Maryland Higher Education Commission

Exemption from this requirement applies to religious institutions that were authorized and have been in continuous operation in Maryland since before January 1, 2013

Religious institutions may operate without Commission approval if they: are established for religious educational purposes, provide programs only for religious vocations, offer only sectarian instruction for individuals seeking to learn particular religious faiths, and state the religious nature on certificates or diplomas
