Handgun permits issued to retired law enforcement officers who retired in good standing from Maryland state, county, or municipal agencies will expire 5 years after issuance, rather than the standard 2 years

Retired law enforcement officers may renew their permits for successive 5-year periods, compared to the standard 3-year renewal periods for other permit holders

Applicants must still possess the qualifications for permit issuance at the time of renewal and are exempt from fingerprinting requirements unless needed to verify identity

Retired law enforcement officers remain exempt from paying permit application and renewal fees under existing law
