Prohibits intentionally or knowingly storing a handgun in an unoccupied motor vehicle unless the handgun is in a locked hard-sided container out of plain view and the vehicle (including trunk) is locked

First-time violations constitute a civil violation with fines of $200 to $500; repeat violations carry fines of $500 to $1,000

Exempts law enforcement officers, hunters with valid licenses while engaged in authorized hunting activities, instructors of hunter education or handgun safety programs, and National Guard or U.S. Armed Forces Reserves members on active duty orders

Adds new section §2017 to Title 25 of Maine Revised Statutes governing handgun storage in vehicles
