Changes the selection method for Maine's State Auditor from election by the Legislature (joint ballot of Senators and Representatives) to statewide popular election beginning in 2028

State Auditor would be elected every 4 years in the same manner as the Governor

Vacancies occurring after 2028 would be filled by gubernatorial appointment, subject to confirmation in the same manner as Justices of the Supreme Judicial Court

Retains existing qualification requirements: must be a certified public accountant or college graduate with at least 6 years of professional accounting/auditing experience, including 5 years of auditing and 4 years in a supervisory capacity

Candidates elected without CPA, certified information systems auditor, or certified internal auditor certification must obtain qualification within 9 months of taking office or the position becomes vacant
