Municipalities may appoint local boards of health with 3-7 members, including one physician, advanced practice nurse, or physician assistant if available in the community

Board members must have expertise in areas such as medicine, public health, mental health, nursing, social work, or communications, and serve staggered 3-year terms

Boards function as advisory bodies to the local health officer and may educate the public on health issues, propose health ordinances, and advise local officials and departments

Boards may collaborate with nonprofits, businesses, and other entities but cannot direct the work of the local health officer or other municipal employees

Outside funding requires municipal permission and must follow municipal financial procedures
