Licensed mortuary science practitioners may compile lists of names of unclaimed cremated remains held for 6 months or longer to identify deceased veterans of the United States armed services.

Funeral directors may release the list of names to federally chartered veterans service organizations to confirm veteran eligibility for proper disposition at veterans cemeteries through the national cemetery administration's central scheduling office in St. Louis, Missouri.

If unclaimed cremated remains are determined to be eligible for veterans cemetery disposition, funeral directors must send written notice of intent and may arrange proper disposition at state or national veterans cemeteries if remains are not claimed after notice.

Funeral directors complying with these provisions are granted immunity from criminal or civil liability.

Effective July 1, 2010, contingent upon enactment of House Bill 5246.
