School bus drivers must possess a certificate of enrollment in or completion of a school bus safety education course within the preceding 2 years, with entry level courses available within 90 days of enrollment.

Persons in charge of school bus operations must complete beginning driver training in their first year and 6 hours of supervisory continuing education every 2 years thereafter.

State shall reimburse the cost of course instruction and base rate compensation for drivers on an equal basis for public and nonpublic schools, with attendance at courses counted as compensable work time.

School bus drivers with diabetes may be exempt from federal medical qualification requirements if they meet specific conditions including physician evaluation, completion of information surveys, and demonstration of adequate diabetes control and management.

Schools must request background checks from the state police for school bus driver applicants to determine convictions for sexual conduct offenses, assault, child abuse, or other specified crimes; smoking and possession of alcohol or controlled substances on school buses are prohibited.
