Secretary of State cannot issue registration plates for special purpose government vehicles transferred from state or local government agencies until the distinctive markings are removed.

For former state police vehicles specifically, the front push bar, state police insignia, distinctive red or blue lights, and specialized equipment must be removed before registration is permitted.

Secretary of State may issue temporary registration plates valid for not more than 15 days to allow owners time to comply with modification requirements.

Auction sellers of special purpose vehicles must inform potential buyers of the registration requirements, and buyers may rescind the sale within 90 days if they were not given proper notice.

Operating a transferred special purpose government vehicle without proper registration is a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than 93 days or a fine of not more than $500, or both.
