Department of Education must develop a model dating violence policy by July 1, 2009 to assist school districts and public school academies in creating their own policies.

Department must develop or adopt a model curriculum for grades 7-12 on dating violence education by July 1, 2009, to be incorporated into recommended core academic curriculum content standards.

School districts and public school academies operating grades 7-12 must adopt and implement a dating violence policy by December 1, 2009 that includes zero-tolerance statements, reporting procedures, response guidelines, and discipline procedures specific to dating violence incidents.

Schools must incorporate age-appropriate dating violence education into health curriculum for grades 7-12 covering definitions, warning signs, and healthy relationship characteristics, and must provide dating violence training to administrators, teachers, counselors, nurses, and mental health staff.

Parents or guardians must be informed of the dating violence policy and provided access to curriculum materials upon request; the bill does not prevent victims from seeking civil or criminal remedies under other laws.
