SB-0950 Summary

• Prohibits misrepresenting current or former military status when making claims about military awards, decorations, rank, service in armed forces, wartime service, combat zone service, or other details of military service with intent to defraud, obtain employment, or gain election or appointment to public office.

• Establishes exceptions for military reenactments, theatrical or dramatic productions, patriotic events, active military members performing ceremonial duties, museum employees, collectors of militaria who do not claim personal ownership, and those using military ranks in personal or business names without fraudulent intent.

• Creates a misdemeanor offense punishable by imprisonment for not more than 1 year, a fine of not more than $5,000, or both, plus not more than 100 hours of community service in a veterans home or for a veterans service organization.

• Allows defendants to be charged and convicted of other violations in addition to this offense.

• Designates the law as the "stolen valor law."
