Removes the requirement for children to attend public school until age 16; parents of children age 16 and older (who turned 11 on or after December 1, 2009, or entered grade 6 in 2009 or later) may provide written notice to allow the child to stop attending school.

Maintains compulsory attendance from age 6 to age 16 for children who turned 11 before December 1, 2009, or entered grade 6 before 2009.

Removes language extending compulsory attendance to age 18 for children turning 11 on or after December 1, 2009, or entering grade 6 in 2009 or later.

Eliminates the exception in Section 1596 that previously applied to children described in the age 18 attendance provision, allowing habitually truant students age 16 or older to be assigned to ungraded schools.
