SB 1229 Summary

• Beginning July 1, 2010, intermediate school districts must provide transportation services for constituent districts and public school academies that choose to offer pupil transportation, with fees not exceeding actual costs.

• Intermediate school districts must obtain competitive bids before entering into or renewing transportation service contracts, with a model bidding process developed by the superintendent of public instruction by May 1, 2010.

• School districts are prohibited from directly providing transportation services beginning July 1, 2010, but may provide these services through their intermediate school district instead.

• Competitive bidding requirements do not apply to contracts under $20,000, with that threshold adjusted annually based on consumer price index changes.

• All amendments to sections 1321-1333 add references to section 1320 to subject existing transportation provisions to the new intermediate school district transportation requirements.
