Director of construction code may promulgate rules to establish an "elderly friendly" designation for construction and renovation of residential buildings, adopting design standards from public or private entities.

"Elderly friendly" standards must include one-story barrier-free living with primary sleeping, eating, and bathroom areas on one level.

Doorways and hallways must be at least 32 inches wide to accommodate wheelchairs or motorized handicapped conveyances.

Buildings must have flush entryways and thresholds, nonslip floors and bathing facilities, and lever door handles and rocker light switches.

Director shall update the state construction code at least every 3 years to coincide with national code change cycles, and make Michigan-specific codes publicly available for at least 45 days before enforcement.
