MI SB1595

Amends the Insurance Code of 1956 to expand coverage requirements for obstetrical and gynecological services under health maintenance organization contracts and expense-incurred hospital, medical, or surgical policies.

Requires coverage for obstetrical and gynecological services performed by nurse midwives and certified professional midwives acting within the scope of their license, specialty certification, or national certification, in addition to physicians.

Defines "certified professional midwife" as an individual credentialed by the North American Registry of Midwives.

Defines "nurse midwife" as a registered professional nurse licensed under Michigan law with a specialty certification in nurse midwifery from the Michigan Board of Nursing.

Requires coverage for all maternity services and gynecological services during pre- and post-natal care and delivery regardless of whether delivery occurs in a hospital, birth center, or at home.

Effective date: March 1, 2011.
