Authorizes a dental hygienist to utilize a dental assistant as a "second pair of hands" during active patient treatment, notwithstanding existing supervision rules in section 16601(1)(f).

Permits a dental assistant to function as a "second pair of hands" for a dentist or dental hygienist only when the dentist or hygienist is actively performing services in the patient's mouth.

Requires that a supervising dentist must assign the dental assistant to assist a dental hygienist in this capacity.

Clarifies that this authorization does not require new or additional third party reimbursement or mandatory workers' compensation benefits for dental assistants or hygienists.

Became effective on August 1, 2012.
