Barge owners must display their name, address, and telephone number on the hull in light-reflective letters at least 6 inches tall in a contrasting color.

Barge operators must illuminate barges with 4 or more white lights from sunset to sunrise when the barge projects into a channel, reduces navigable width, is not parallel to moorings, or is moored with other barges.

Lights must meet Michigan Administrative Code requirements, be visible from at least 1 nautical mile in clear conditions at night, and be positioned on outside or projecting corners based on barge configuration.

Groups of moored barges cannot exceed 82 feet in total width, and the Department or local authority may immediately move non-compliant vessels with owners liable for costs.

Violations are misdemeanors punishable by up to 90 days imprisonment or $10,000 fine, with each 24-hour period constituting a separate violation; convicted persons must pay actual costs of vessel movement.
