HB 5534 Summary

• Eliminates the 2-credit foreign language requirement for high school diploma graduation that was previously mandated under the Michigan merit standard.

• Adds computer science and other appropriate concentrations as approved by the department to the list of career and technical education programs that can fulfill algebra II requirements.

• Allows pupils to modify certain Michigan merit standard requirements through a personal curriculum if requested by parent/guardian and approved by superintendent, with restrictions on modifying English language arts and science credits.

• Requires department to post implementation guidelines within 30 days of the amendatory act's effective date for expanded career and technical education options that can satisfy mathematics credit requirements.
