HB-5544 Summary

• Amends MCL 750.226 to clarify that carrying a firearm, razor, or knife with unlawful intent against another person is a felony punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment or a fine of up to $2,500.00, or both.

• Revises MCL 750.227(1) to prohibit carrying double-edged nonfolding knives or other dangerous weapons designed to cause death or injury, whether concealed or in a vehicle, except in dwelling house, place of business, or possessed land, or when carried for hunting, fishing, trapping, or occupational purposes.

• Maintains MCL 750.227(2) prohibition on concealed pistol carry outside dwelling house, place of business, or possessed land without a license, and requires compliance with license restrictions.

• Changes MCL 750.227(3) penalty for weapon violations to a felony punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment or a fine of up to $2,500.00, or both.

• Preserves MCL 750.231 exemptions for peace officers, corrections department employees, military members, security employees, and motor carrier officers from weapon carrying prohibitions.
