Individuals must be licensed as athletic trainers in Michigan beginning February 4, 2010 to engage in the practice of athletic training, unless otherwise authorized.

Licensed professionals in other regulated fields may perform athletic training activities within their existing scope of practice without obtaining an athletic trainer license, provided they do not use protected athletic trainer titles.

Use of titles including "athletic trainer," "licensed athletic trainer," "certified athletic trainer," "a.t.," "a.t.l.," "c.a.t.," "a.t.c.," or similar designations is prohibited unless the individual is licensed as an athletic trainer in Michigan.

Athletic trainers who are certified by the board of certification or licensed in another state may practice in Michigan for up to 30 consecutive days when present for an event requiring athletic trainer services, without obtaining Michigan licensure.
