Increases penalties for domestic violence assault (MCL 750.81) when the offender has one prior conviction from a misdemeanor (up to 93 days) to up to 1 year imprisonment or $1,000 fine.

Increases penalties for domestic violence assault when the offender has two or more prior convictions to a felony punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment or $5,000 fine.

Applies enhanced penalties to assaults involving spouses, former spouses, dating partners, individuals with shared children, and household residents.

Increases penalties for aggravated domestic assault (MCL 750.81a) when the offender has one or more prior convictions to a felony punishable by up to 5 years imprisonment or $5,000 fine.

Effective date: April 1, 2013.
